Shortly before noon on Monday, April 25, Somerset County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 911 call from a convenience store in Westover after a man later identified as William Robert Brink allegedly held up the business at gunpoint while demanding money before fleeing the area.
Approximately two miles away, Somerset County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Kevin Coepfert located Brink, according to the AG, and during their confrontation, both men fired their weapons.
Brink then fled toward a field near the intersection of US 13 and Perry Road, prompting an additional response from the sheriff's office, Maryland State Police, and the Prince Anne Police Department, which assisted at the scene.
The AG said that when officers located Brink, he fired his handgun again, shooting himself in the chin. He initially fell to the ground but stood back up seconds later, according to officials.
At that point, Deputy First Class Anthony Jackson of the Somerset County Sheriff's Office and Maryland State Police Cpl. Jason Dykes discharged their service weapons, hitting Brink twice.
Brink was taken to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
No other injuries were reported.
The IID concluded its investigation on Tuesday, Aug. 2, and forwarded its investigative report to the Somerset County State’s Attorney’s Office on Wednesday, Aug 3, according to the AG. The Somerset County State’s Attorney’s Office notified the IID on Friday, Aug. 12 of its decision not to prosecute the case.
